FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

HOW DO I KNOW IF HOME SHARING IS RIGHT FOR ME?

In some ways you won’t know it until you try it. By utilizing the tools that THS offers, you gain insight about yourself and your willingness to share your life with another person. As conversations about important matters take shape about how you like to live in your home, the nuances of a relationship begin to emerge. Identifying potential homemates occurs by reviewing self-assessment information shared in the form of housing announcements. An initial phone call can provide basic information about the essentials - must have’s and can’t live withs - or you can decide not to continue that conversation.

IS THS A MATCHING SERVICE?

Many home sharing programs offer matching services utilizing assessment tools, but also some computer-driven matches. THS strongly believes the process of getting to know someone in a structured manner creates the best foundation for ongoing conversations learning about your similarities and how best to handle the differences. Our Do It Yourself (DIY) model of finding and keeping good housemates is a key to forming long lasting relationships.

HOW MUCH TIME WILL IT TAKE?

Quite simply, it does not happen overnight. Such a significant decision to share housing with another requires reflection as well as action. The process includes the following steps:

  • Attend THS’s bi-monthly Public Gatherings to learn more about home sharing benefits and the elements of the process.

  • Complete the Self- Assessment Questionnaire sent to all attendees.

  • Attend Next Steps Workshops 1.0 and 2.0 to move you smoothly and efficiently through the various steps.

  • Write your home sharing announcements and decide where to post them.

  • Reach out to your network. Let everyone know you are serious about finding a compatible homemate.

It can happen overnight… but a typical DIY process can take a while.

I NEED TO BE OUT OF MY APARTMENT SOON - CAN THS HELP?

Typically, it can take several months to secure a lasting home sharing relationship.  You need time to get to know yourself not to mention another person. Finding a home sharing relationship takes time and rushing to find someone is always risky. The THS website Resource page has listings of organizations that can help to prevent impending homelessness.

HOW DO I FIND A RESPONSIBLE HOMEMATE AND TAKE THE WORRY OUT OF MAKING A BIG LIFESTYLE CHANGE?

Follow the steps recommended by Tucson Home Sharing. Even if you are not detail-oriented, create a system for tracking your leads and your responses. Income Verification and Reference Checks are strongly recommended. Order a complete Background Check if/when your gut tells you that more information is needed. Reach out to THS for help along the way.

DOES IT COST ANYTHING TO ATTEND THS EVENTS AND MEETINGS?

All programs and workshops are free at this point.

IS THS A SUPPORT GROUP?

Sometimes it feels like the Public Gatherings (PGs) could be a support group as we hear different stories about people’s life experiences with roommates of the past. One person’s negative experience can cast a new light on others considering home sharing for the first time. THS will be expanding its list of trained volunteers who will be able to provide coaching and support in 2024.
